Sorel let it rain

I can confidently say that this particular photoshoot ranks among my all-time favorites, and rightfully so. Although I had previous experience working with water and splashes, the magnitude of this project took it to a whole new level.

Collaborating with R\West agency and under the art direction of Elizabeth Morrow-McKenzie, this was an incredibly creative and fulfilling experience. I partnered with the talented retoucher Russ Dodd on this project. Prior to the shoot, we developed a proof of concept that not only showcased our ability to color the splashes, but also provided the client with the flexibility to alter the splash color themselves.

Pulling together all of the elements of this creative concept was no easy feat (pun intended)! To ensure we’d capture the perfect splash assets, we utilized an acrylic "foot" that I had specially made. The presence of our skilled retoucher on-set allowed us to instantly composite images in real-time, enabling quick and collaborative creative decision-making. This shoot was a great illustration of “planning makes perfect”.

Phantom on set

Once we finished capturing the stills for Sorel, they surprised us with an exciting addition to our set—their incredible Phantom camera! It's moments like these that remind us why we love what we do—unexpected surprises and incredible creations.

Building the set for this project was no joke. It was just as challenging as the shoot itself! Armed with 2x4 studs and layers upon layers of thick black sheeting, I worked to bring this indoor pool to life. But here's the twist: I had to make sure it had the strength to hold not just water, but a whopping 200 to 225 gallons of it! Can you even imagine the weight? A hefty 1600 pounds! So, to ease my nerves and avoid any accidental slips, we emptied it every single day and refilled it the next morning.
